What’s the best Harley oil cooler?

Deciding which Harley Davidson oil cooler is best for your Harley is a decision only you can come to. It’s not for this blog to tell you how to spend your money but there are some factors that you need to know about to help you arrive at the right conclusion.

Many bikes only rely on air cooling to extract heat from the engine but for best performance a mixture of air and oil cooling is required. Seen as the bike already has engine oil to lubricate and clean it’s beneficial if it can also be used for cooling. Air and oil cooling both rely on the transfer of heat from a hot substance (water/oil) to a cooler substance, air. To facilitate this transfer a large surface area is required. Think of a glass of water in the sun. Even on hot days it’s unlikely it will evaporate in full. There is only a small surface areas for the heat of the sun to work on (the diameter of the glass). However, splash the water over the pavement and the surface area available for the sun’s rays to work on is hundreds of time greater. This is why in radiators and oil coolers metals fins are used to make the surface area available for heat transfer as large as possible. This gives the quickest cooling as the air blowing over the fins can absorb more heat.

All motor vehicle cooling system rely on this principle and a Harley oil cooler is no different, so the first thing to consider is the depth of the fins. If motor oil gets too hot it becomes less effective at lubrication moving parts. Therefore cooler motorcycle oil can prolong the life of an engine and reduce the need for repairs too. Motor oil also contains additives to stop black deposits from accumulating inside the engine. Because the oil collects heat internally from contact with the hot metal surfaces in the engine the surface area here is important too and cannot be compromised by sludgy deposits preventing oil from ‘soaking’ up the engine’s heat.

Finally, how does it look? A chrome platen cooler can really add to the look of the motorcycle. You have one of the best looking and most distinctive motorcycles ever built. Therefore, an oil cooler for Harley Davidson bikes should be chosen carefully to enhance the look of your bike and not detract from it. It’s hard to say what the best Harley oil cooler is. It depends on your motorcycle. I like to keep things official so if you can get a Harley Sportster oil cooler or touring oil cooler direct from the manufacturer you won’t go far wrong.
